Holy Wednesday marks a significant moment in the Holy Week as it remembers the day when Mary and Judas prepared Jesus for his death. This day holds great significance as it highlights the actions of the key players in the events leading to Jesus' crucifixion.

The Threat of Jesus' Ministry

After numerous challenges to the temple system and Rome, the religious elite considered Jesus a threat to their power and religion. They believed that if Jesus was not killed, Rome would take away their power and destroy their temple. In their eyes, it was better for one man to die than for an entire nation to perish. This belief set in motion a chain of events that culminated in Jesus' crucifixion.

Mary's Lavish Display

Mary took a jar of perfume valued at a year's salary and poured it over Jesus' head and feet. The act was socially awkward and humiliating, but Mary understood the significance of Jesus' impending death. She was preparing Jesus for his burial and showed her love for him by using her most precious possession.

Judas' Betrayal

Judas was one of the disciples and initially spoke out against Mary's actions, claiming it was a waste. However, he later betrayed Jesus by informing the religious elite of his whereabouts for a sum of money. Judas saw Jesus as no longer useful to him and chose personal gain over loyalty.

Jesus' Sacrifice

The events of Holy Wednesday show that everyone was preparing for Jesus' death, but they had different motives. The religious elite saw it as a means to preserve their power, Judas wanted personal gain, and Mary was preparing Jesus for his burial. However, Jesus' death was not for any of these reasons. It was to save God's people from death itself.
